For many people the cost of litigation is beyond their means and representing themselves is more affordable. With this increase in the number of self-represented litigants (SRLs) appearing in matters, practitioners are more likely to face or at least communicate with a SRL during their careers. SRLs can pose a range of challenges to practitioners, from a limited understanding of court procedures to the litigation process.

This seminar is designed to equip practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of the unique difficulties that can arise in matters involving SRLs, empowering them to effectively manage these challenges.

This seminar will cover:

  • The rights of an SRL or lay advocate to appear in proceedings, including ‘sovereign citizens’;
  • SRLs during pre-court communications and negotiation;
  • How to minimise any adverse impact on your day-to-day office procedures and the client;
  • The duties of the court in assisting SRLs and practitioners’ ethical responsibilities to SRLs;
  • Practical guidance on how practitioners and the courts can deal with SRLs including ‘vexatious litigants’.

This seminar will provide practical strategies for dealing with SRLs!
